Film of the week: ‘Serenade’ by Brian Fairbairn

‘Serenade’ by Brian Fairbairn is a great example of how a simple film, done with limited time and resources, can still have a bold impact. A great script, a powerful performance, and the right single location (in this case the CTA Building in Martin Place) can lend itself to be an engaging and captivating piece.

‘Serenade’ –  a Kino Sydney film performed in German – also highlights the rewarding process involved in producing a film in a foreign language.

Film of the Week: ‘Moon Priestess’ by Katty Laguette

‘Moon Priestess’ is a short experimental and stop motion animation from artist and Kino filmmaker Katty Laguette. Using 170 images to create a visual artwork, Laguette produced this film in only 32 hours with the help of fellow filmmakers met through Kino Maurice (Mauritius). The film certainly begs the question of what artistic techniques Kino Sydney filmmakers could employ for their next film?

Kino Maurice is a reminder that Kino Sydney isn’t alone in the world! But part of a filmmaking community that reaches around the world, with Kino cells on every populated continent, and some islands! Kino Maurice held a Kabaret earlier this year, bringing local filmmakers together and challenging them to work together, exchange ideas, and produce short films in only 32 hours.

Film of the Week: ‘Slash’ by Melodie Grumberg

“Slash” is a simple but well executed film, relying on visuals and performances, as opposed to dialogue or an extensive narrative. Directed by Melodie Grumberg, a filmmaker who has made a name for herself at Kino Kabarets around the world, including Sydney, and was formerly part of Kino Paname (Paris).
Grumberg has a wafty, quirky aesthetic and a vivid visual palette, and her storytelling varies between delving into the fears of the human psyche, to the humorous depictions of every day life. Her cinematic voice is European at heart, however the stories transcend location. Check out the rest of Grumberg’s films on her Vimeo channel.

Your stories at Kino Kabaret

See your stories on the big screen with Kino Kabaret 2014.

Kabaret is back for a special one-weekend edition on 5 – 7 December at Sydney Film School. Kabaret is the city’s most collaborative filmmaking challenge.

Join Kino Sydney as we bring filmmakers together to learn new skills, test out professional equipment, make creative contacts, and bounce ideas off each other all while making short films in 48 hours.

The weekend kicks off with a production meeting at 6pm on Friday 5 December at Sydney Film School. SFS has partnered with Kino Sydney to host the Kino Lab – a workspace for filmmakers across the weekend and the place to find filmmaking advice and borrow professional equipment.

After slogging it out, from script to screen-ready in only 48 hours, all participants are invited to celebrate at a screening party on Monday 8th December from 6pm at 107 Projects.

It is only $30 to participate this year. The fee covers access to production meetings and assistance in sourcing talent, equipment and locations; access to the Kino Lab at Sydney Film School; access to editing facilities in Sydney Film School; access to royalty-free music; sugar hits supplied at Kino Lab and free entry to screening party.

Film of the Week: “For Love” by Mat Johns. Wanna see what can be achieved in just 48 hours? Take a look at this funny Kabaret short from our Kino friends all the way in Manchester.

Mat was able to pull together a good script, dynamic camera work and fine-tuned performances into a polished film in a matter of two days.
