Get the most of your Kino Kabaret experience!
The Rules of Kabaret
- Respect! Respect others equipment, boundaries and most importantly, time.
- The best way to get involved is to find someone and start making a movie
- Kabaret is about making and experimenting – movies don’t need to be perfect, they just need to be!
- Speed is important during Kabs – every second counts!
- Have any questions? Feeling lost, and don’t know where to start? Come chat to the Kino crew and we can help you out.
- Label your belongings. You don’t want your things to get mix up with others.
- There are countless props available at Sydney Props for Kabaret attendees to use. Make sure props are returned to where you found them, and do not touch anything that is to be hired out by someone else. Unsure? Ask staff on the day. Anything large, ask for assistance.
- All finished films must have the Kino logo attached to the end credits.
Good tips to remember
Now with the tedious bits out of the way, there are some things you can do to make the most of your experience.
We’ve done a few of these things before, and these are the things the Kino crew have seen people who get the most out of the Kab experience:
- No topic can be off limits but focus on what can be achieved during the 48 hours. You may not come away with a festival worthy film, but you will learn how to apply this to you next film.
- Even though it’s Kab (and things can get chaotic) having a plan can go a long way to completing your films on time.
- Be prepared to adapt your ideas as things constantly change during Kab.
- Some people at Kab have a lot of experience, others don’t have any.
- Those who enjoy Kab the most are those who say yes often and focus on finishing films.
- If you find yourself sitting around, chat to the Kino crew – we can give you plenty of ways to make films
- We are all here because we love making movies, and, we all want to have fun.
Things to shoot:
Haiku Films
The easiest style of film to make is a haiku. A haiku film contains three shots:
- The first shot = 5 seconds
- The second shot = 7 seconds
- The third shot = 5 seconds
And that’s it. We see many of these being made at Kabs. And if you’re waiting around for another film to be made, or just looking for a place to start, you can make one of this (filmed and edited) within 30 mins.
5 Second films
Making a five second film sounds easy right? It might be harder than you think, but a whole heap of fun once you get into it.
Challenges
Stuck on ideas? We’ll have a box of ideas for you to grab inspiration from if you get stuck on ideas.
SF3 Micro Fiction texts
Think of festivals you can make films to enter your Kabaret film into. One great festival that’s around the corner is SF3 and if you’re in need of inspiration, check out ‘SF3 Micro Fiction Texts’. There’s a list of mini-stories for you to turn into films to enter into SF3 festival.
What’s more, you don’t need a fancy camera, just your phone.
You can check out these fully-rounded narratives with interesting characters and themes HERE.
